The young live in the future. The old live in the past. Only matter with no mass but present.
An object with mass traces out worldlines in spacetime. Without mass, there are no worldlines, so the distinction between different cross-sections of time becomes less meaningful, and the "present" could hypothetically pass through any cross-section. Mass warps spacetime, giving structure to the flow of time.
Spacetime could be flat without mass, and perhaps the flow of "now" is arbitrary, in which case the now cross-sections are not anchored to anything physical and can move freely, passing through different spacetime cross-sections. While a cross-section of spacetime is a particular slice through this four-dimensional structure, the "now" cross-section moves and passes through different points in spacetime if there is no mass present.
Light interacts with other particles to create mass. When light passes through different media, such as water, glass, or even air, its speed can decrease due to the interaction between the light and the particles in the medium, which can absorb and re-emit the light, effectively slowing it down. Slowed light interacts with us and becomes the passage of time. The very existence is deeply tied to the fundamental forces and particles that make up the universe. Light, as a form of electromagnetic radiation, plays a crucial role in biological processes, such as photosynthesis in plants, which converts light energy into chemical energy, supporting life on Earth. The very act of existing and interacting with our surroundings shapes our experience of time and life. It's a reminder of how the physical laws governing the universe also influence our perception of reality and our place within it.
Without massive objects warping spacetime, the progression of the movement of the cross-section through time would be uniform across all parts of space for an inertial observer. If there is no mass, spacetime isn’t curved by gravity, so the progression of time (or the movement of the "now" cross-section) would proceed uniformly. Without the influence of mass or energy, the cross-section of "now" would simply advance through time, free from distortions caused by gravitational fields.
